The lighting on The Voice Beams, colours and voices
In this hit show where we have to use our ears rather than our eyes, we discover amateur singers before the blind jury of the TV talent show. Indeed, we cannot fail to see them in the beautiful lighting provided by the director of photography Frédéric Dorieux and Phase 4 audiovisual service provider, which reminds us that the programme is a spectacle above all, to those who look as well as listen.
It is unsurprising then that a big lighting kit is rigged around the set, with pride of place given over to the new WILDSUN 500 C LED moving heads, standing alongside the lights usually found in the famous French designer’s light shows.
Enough therefore for these budding stars to shine, evolving in a nonetheless super codified décor, to satisfy international specifications that standardise the stage, the tiers and the four judges’ chairs.
André Mytnik, manager of the French company PHASE 4, discusses their arrival on rigging installed by Frédéric Dorieux: « In the auditions, in other words the Blind and Battle rounds, there were a lot of automatic beams. It was the Prime that made room for Beams, which were already on the Battles. It was also at this stage that the new AYRTON LED washes were deployed. In the end we installed more than 450 projectors, with few traditional ones. »
The WILDSUN was welcomed with great pomp and ceremony, selected to respond to a request from the directors of photography Dorieux Frédéric and Jean Philippe Bourdon: « To have a high-performance LED projector, with an interesting look ».
Following a test procedure carried out on the premises of the lighting contractor on a day on which most of the Wash LED moving heads on the market were represented, the WILDSUN 500 made it through with the C version « thanks to its mix of high-performance colour and the total absence of shadows in the projection », André Mytnik explains. “The colour spread was a great success. »
This version was chosen for its optical properties. « The beam is not as narrow as the S version, but is a great performer in colour (thanks to the white at 4000K). »
It was also chosen for its accurate colorimetry, which is highly sought after by TV lighting technicians:
« We needed a top quality colorimetry to be able to align the screen with the colours of the moving heads, and the WILDSUN 500 C was up to the challenge, particularly with its beautiful pastels ».
This is also why the PHASE 4 warehouse welcomes the 60 WILDSUN 500 C projectors which « go out fairly regularly and provide complete satisfaction to our cinematographer partners ».
The set is also home to a large video installation requiring a reflected light design to harmonise a set of 450 projectors with the video screens and performers, integrating innovations that are showcased, and adhering to a rigid framework imposed by the décor and the show’s codes.
A mission that Dorieux Frédéric and his teams pursue expertly throughout the season, which has brought us beautiful scenes where the pastel hues of the WILDSUN 500 C easily bore comparison with the rich colours made in the USA.
